The Story Behind Our Name
Honouring Lady Gregory
At the heart of our hotel is a name steeped in literary history and local pride, Lady Gregory Hotel. We’re named in honour of Lady Isabella Augusta Gregory, a remarkable woman who left an incredible cultural legacy right here in Gort.
Lady Isabella Augusta Gregory
Lady Gregory was a co-founder of the Abbey Theatre and a driving force in the Irish Literary Revival. Her home at nearby Coole Park became a creative retreat for some of Ireland’s most celebrated writers, including her close friend W.B. Yeats, who spent many summers just up the road at Thoor Ballylee.
To celebrate her influence, we’ve paid tribute in more than just our name. Our restaurant, Isabella’s, is named after her, a warm, welcoming space where guests can relax and enjoy the kind of hospitality Lady Gregory herself was known for. And in a nod to her literary circle, our W.B. Yeats Suite is a stylish venue for events and meetings, inspired by the poet’s long-standing connection to the area.
Art lovers will also notice our main bar is named after Yeats’ brother, the brilliant Irish artist Jack B. Yeats, whose creativity was just as vibrant as his brother’s verse.
So when you stay with us, you’re not just enjoying a hotel, you’re stepping into a story, one woven through with poetry, art, and a deep respect for the incredible cultural roots of this part of Ireland.
