The Aran Islands are a group of three islands located at the mouth of Galway Bay, just off Galway & Doolin on the west coast of Ireland. A true Irish experience awaits, locals speak Irish as well as English in a setting of Celtic churches of historical significance.
There are various ways of getting to the Aran Islands. Choose from Galway City Docks, Rossaveal in Connemara, Doolin Ferry or 10 minutes by air from Rossaveal. Sailing times vary depending on which island you visit.
From west to east the islands are Inishmore, the largest, Inishmaan, the second largest and Inisheer the smallest island.
The largest island, Inishmore, meaning the big island, is a place of natural beauty with a unique landscape. It is home to the prehistoric fort of Dún Aonghasa, which is set on a dramatic 300 ft cliff edge. Nearby is the worm hole, a rectangular natural pool.
The second largest of the islands, Inishmaan is where you’ll find amore authentic escape from the modern world. With a population of 200 people, it is the less visited of the three islands. This island has a hilly landscape and features crystal clear views of the Cliffs of Moher and some interesting Centic and Christian sites. Most recently is has become a centre for diving with its beautiful marine life and clear waters.
The smallest island Inisheer, is characterised by its distinctive charm. The Cliffs of Moher are clearly visible in all its panoramic splendor. The main village area is right next to the beach and is enclosed by a small hill with a castle and a fort at the top. The island is 3km by 3km wide with small hills and intricate little valley’s and is easily covered by foot of bike. The island features a traditional music bar which is has a nationwide reputation for the finest music and great night out.
